White Stakes - Golf Rules

White stakes or white lines are used to indicate where the “out of bounds” portion of a hole is. However there may be other ways a course can mark out of bounds. An example might be a street that is adjacent to the length of a hole, or perhaps a property marking fence. Typically these are indicated on the back of the scorecard - which can almost always be used to govern “local” rules.

Red Stakes - Golf Rules

Red stakes and lines indicate a lateral water hazard. A lateral water hazard is differentiated from a water hazard by the fact that it runs alongside or adjacent to the line of play, rather than directly across it.
