The Club at Flying Horse - First Look
March 7th, 2008 by mulligan
Located north of downtown Colorado Springs, The Club at Flying Horse is ideally situated just east of the foothills offering breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains and more specifically Pike’s Peak. I had the privilege of getting a personal tour of the entire facility (minus the course) by Wendy McHenry, the membership director. In a word the club is amazing.
We started our tour in the most natural of spaces, the clubhouse. Construction of the clubhouse was completed last year, however this will be it’s first full season in service. The overall exterior feel of the clubhouse reminds me of well established wineries one might visit in Napa Valley. Something that really jumped out at me was the architect’s ability to recognize where to use the positioning of the building to offer the best breathtaking views of the mountains and surrounding area. The building itself offers various facilities one should expect at a high end private club. Numerous meeting rooms, upscale restaurant, and a three story wine cellar prominently displayed where members have the ability to “rent” space and store their own wine!

The course is around 7300 yards, and while I didn’t get to play it – it is after all still early March – the pictures which hang in the clubhouse demonstrate it’s beauty quite nicely. Locker rooms contain full and half lockers, generous seating areas, and a steam room. Again, amenities you’d expect to find at most golf Clubs. The detail however is what makes a difference here. Arched brick walkways, solid hardwood steps, large windows, plenty of breezeways for summer eating indoors with an outdoor feel. It all adds up to quality.

So what about winter? This is often the question that I ask myself when it comes to joining a club. What does the club offer in the winter that I can take advantage of while it’s impossible to golf. Well, let me start by saying they offer a “underground” heated driving range! As far as I know, this is the only one of it’s kind in the state – perhaps the US… but that would be a bold statement (I should have asked!). Anyhow, the “bunker” allows players to hit onto the range during the winter months without being completely exposed to the elements. There is also a 50,000 sf. Fitness club. Again, the fitness club is appointed with the same level of detail as the clubhouse. While the buildings themselves are separated by about a block, they still feel connected. A generous workout area is combined with a full sized basketball court, which “feels” outside, due to the generous use of large windows throughout. There is an indoor/outdoor Jacuzzi, and an outdoor heated pool. Also included in the building is a full function Spa. Daycare is also offered and I was told you get a maximum of 3 hours which enables plenty of time to squeeze in your 9!

All in all, I was quite impressed with the facilities. I was even more impressed with the price of membership. Now, in comparison, Colorado Golf Club (located in Parker) doesn’t have their clubhouse built yet, but they are asking $100,000 to join with upwards of $600 per month in fees. The Club at Flying Horse (25 minutes South of Castle Rock) is currently asking $39,000 with 85% of that being refundable. Their monthly fees are $375 for the family.
