Fox Hollow - Review

Overview
Fox Hollow Golf Course is located in Lakewood just a few miles east of C-470 off of Morrison Road. Nestled close to the foothills this course offered the architecht Denis Griffiths a variety of options for making holes both traditional yet interesting. Since opening in 1993, this course is typically rated as one of the best facilities to play at year in and year out. Having played it numerous times, the first thing that stands out is the overall condition of the course. It’s typically outstanding. The greens are in excellent shape all season, and the fairways even during the driest parts of the year are extremely well cared for. There are 3 distinctly different 9’s on this course and while the consensus seems to favor Canyon/Meadows, the Links 9 offers the variety that most traditional 18 hole courses lack. You can play Fox Hollow 3 different ways, but depending on how you start off, the total can reach 9! However, if you’re playing here for the first time, call ahead as you might prefer to play Canyon/Meadows over the Links.
Playability
In the heat of the summer, the native grass will devour anything inadvertently thrown it’s way. In other words, you will (as is the case on most courses in Colorado) lose your ball to it. The course offers a variety of looks from the various tee boxes. there are a couple of holes (#9 Canyon, #3 Meadows) that give you a risk reward opportunity as well. The Canyon starts off with an uphill par 4 that almost feels like teeing off into a wall of green carpet, and plays to an elevated long, thin green with a super tall flag stick for back pin positions. While it may sound awkward, it’s a great way to let you know what type of shot making you’ll be dealing with on the Canyon side. Elevated tee boxes, slanting fairways, and uphill approach shots is really what the Canyon is about.
The Meadows also opens up with a hole that hints at what you’ll need to do in order to score well. It’s a relatively short par 5, but the tee shot must be hit through a gap in a line of tall old cottonwood trees. Basically it’s telling you that you may need to put your fear aside for this nine and if you do, you’ll score fairly well here. It’s not an incredibly long course, but does require on certain holes the ability to shape your shots rather than just bomb them straight away in order to give you a good look at the green. Even with that said, you can still bomb away and be fairly certain you’ll have a look!
The Links side of the course is basically wide open. It’s only real threat is the wind (which can protect the entire 27 holes of Fox Hollow quite well) as it sweeps down the front range and can force you to play lower trajectory penetrating shots. On calm days, the Links side is really protected by the native grasses that grow quite tall. What you will find here is a more traditional Colorado Plains style 9 holes with slightly elevated tee boxes, and moderately sloping fairways. Nothing too dramatic but still an enjoyable course to play.
Conclusion
This course is fairly inexpensive to play at a range from $27 to $52. Couple that with the overall great condition of the course, it’s relative close location to a large number of golfers and what you get is a course that is almost always sold out on the weekends. Call in advance to secure your spot. It’s a fun course for players of all abilities and practically everyone I’ve talked to about this course has something positive to say for it.
