The Meadows Golf Club - Review

Overview

The Meadows Golf Club, one of the many Dick Phelps inspired designs in the state was created with the assistance of Brad Benz and Mike Poellot. The course is situated on the west side of Littleton just east of C-470. Although it’s nesteled up close to the foothills, the views offered by this course are not as dramatic as some of what you get from other nearby courses (Fossil Trace, Fox Hollow, The Homestead). It’s a links style course, but not a traditional links layout where you would play the roll of the fairways and such. There are no real elevation changes on this course with the exception of the 6th hole which offers an elevated tee box and a dramatic tee shot to go with. The only downside to this box (and the hole) is that it parallels C-470 which brings with it engine noise, and the occassional honk from a teenager or someone who doesn’t quite understand/appreciate the game of golf. This doesn’t deter you from the excitement of climbing those stairs to the top in anticipation of making the shot!

Playability

Overall the course is not a difficult one to play. It feels fair in that if you make a bad shot, you’re penalized only for that shot, and for every good shot you make, you’re often rewarded with a realistic scoring opportunity. In the heat of the summer, don’t stray too far off the course path as rattlesnakes are known to frequent the area in the tall native grass that protects the course well. The fairways are traditionally in good shape (Winter Rye). What always impresses me are the greens on this course. What you can expect here are some of the best kept public greens in the state. At times I’ve found it hard to locate divots in the greens. That’s not saying they aren’t there, it’s just remarkable how well the greens seem to be kept up. They roll very consistently and subtle undulations offer a challenge at almost every hole. #16 is probably a great example with about 3 different levels, and a high hogback in the middle. The keys to scoring on this course don’t really come down to the tee shots. It truly is a combination of the approach and short game. This is nice for the average golfer who doesn’t crush the tee ball.

Conclusion

This is another course who’s fees are not astronomical, which is great because not only is it affordable, but it’s priced right about where it should be. Having said that, what this also means is that you can expect a LOT of traffic on this course. As mentioned though, the greens hold up well to all this play, but you might consider an early morning round as the later rounds will possibly be affected by the number of golfers this course sees. The overall consistency in this course, it’s average length, and it’s laid back attitude should entice you to go out and play it at least once!
